The 16th Cavalry Regiment is a casual realism unit for Arma 3. The regiment first had its founding in 2011 as an infantry clan for a Napoleonic warfare mod for Mount and Blade: Warband; through various iterations the community maintined its sense of identity - starting in the Arma series through Arma 2 some time in 2012. Through the events that have influenced us through the years, we have forged for ourselves our own traditions and ideas for what our Arma experience should be.
The purpose of this community is to provide an authentic, realistic Arma experience without the added baggage of some 'Realism' or 'Milsim' units; rather going for a "Casual Realism" feel. We accomplish this objective by ensuring we strike a good balance between the structure and order of an established group with the relaxation of a casual community.
How we organize ourselves
In the 16th, members are assigned to sections. Outside of Arma, these are primarily administrative: delegating personnel management and training from one central person to several persons who have stepped up. Occasionally during major or pre-planned operations sections with all their assigned members directly carry over into our Arma sessions. However during most regular Arma sessions these sections somewhat dissolve, roles being given out on a first-come-first-serve basis by rank (and sometimes with caveats by session admin). Once in a mission, the command structure is determined by the roles selected, rather than persons ranks within the community at large outside of Arma.
Our missions are made in-house by members who have been approved to do so. The factions we play aren't static, instead determined by what the mission maker felt would be interesting. Likewise, the types of missions we do vary by mission maker preferences. Members can expect anything from Air Assault to Convoy missions in one session. What does remain consistent is the challenge we try to attain by limiting the quality and quantity of equipment used. For example, high powered optics and heavy armor are employed in a very discretionary manner.
We have three different types of events. Sessions are the weekly Arma event where multiple missions are played starting at 9:00 PM CST. Operations are irregular events that can take place of a regular session which have a major mission made where considerable pre-session planning is put in. Trainings are exactly that; generally, there is a seasonal unit-wide 'drill' where we do basic maneuvers, but we also have short trainings several hours before regular sessions to ensure new members have their mods working and know the basics.
